Joynt Family Summary

The Joynt family arrived in Manchester from Ireland, it hasn’t been possible to determine exactly where in Ireland the earlier generations originated. Margaret Joynt first married John Renshaw and the Renshaw family included a John Renshaw who had a greengrocer’s shop in Ordsall, and later in Pendleton, Salford. After her husband died Margaret settled with Martin Hartigan, also widowed, and bore several more children. Both Margaret and Martin Hartigan died before the children were adults; their Renshaw half siblings did their best to look out for the children, but the two eldest boys, Martin and Henry Hartigan, were taken into St Joseph’s Industrial Schools for Boys.

Martin left St Joseph’s when he was old enough to work but, sadly, he was killed when a horse he was stabling kicked him. Henry was bereft and had to find his own way in life. He became a carter, like his older brother, and worked for the Ship Canal for many years, having a family of his own with his second wife Emily Dooley, who he married after both of them had been widowed. Henry Hartigan and his family settled in Pendleton, Salford.
