The Belton Family Tree
The Belton Family of Bwlchgwyn in North Wales
We believe that the Belton family may have come from Spain to work the tin mines in Cornwall and then moved up to the Wrexham/North Wales area from Halkyn and Llanarmon to Bwlchgwyn, eventually to work the lead mines around the small village of Minera. This is the history of the lead miners who came to North Wales from Cornwall in, probably, the 18th century. This is a different family from the Belton families in the Lincolnshire area.
My branch of the Belton family lived in Bwlchgwyn, near Wrexham, North Wales (UK). Other members of the family have traced the line back to approximately 1700 and the family tree, reproduced below in linear style, is extensive.
Minera was known for the wealth of minerals under its soils, the Romans were well aware of this and carted lime stone, and whatever else they might have mined, through Bwlchgwyn and Nant y Ffrith to be sent to Chester where the plan had been to build a large fort. Apparently they gave the name Minera to any area where they found mineral deposits. A few years ago I found companies in South America with names similar to The Belton Mineral Company of S. America; they were huge mining concerns; I would love to find out whether any of those Beltons were connected with us.
When the first Belton miners found their way to Llanarmon, Bwlchgwyn, Minera and Gwynfryn it is likely that they were simply moving on from the lead mines on Halkyn mountain, which had been worked out, just as they had moved from Cornwall when the tin mining failed. Hopefully, now that I have time to resume the research, this might become clearer. Similarly with the Spanish stories – my DNA results suggests that it is quite possible.
Bwlchgwyn was something of a vague area of land in the early nineteenth century. These days Bwlchgwyn is firmly centered on the modern village that pivots around the War Memorial on the Ruthin Road, but previously most of the area was waste land and/or common land with just the occasional rough built dwelling; in those days more mention was made of Bwlch Gwyn Mountain, now still a sparsely populated area on the highest points of Bwlchgwyn and out towards Gwynfryn. Much later the Church of England seemed to delight in creating and merging and demerging parishes. Bwlchgwyn has been in the parish of Bwlchgwyn, Minera or Brymbo at times. One census suggests that everyone in Bwlchgwyn lived in, or came from, Brymbo because the village, at the time, was in Brymbo parish. A little imagination is sometimes required.
The village did have its own attractions for lead miners. The older maps of the village show lead shafts dotted around on the higher ground, whilst chunks of the village were mined away for the high quality silica that was valuable for roadstone. Whether Bwlchgwyn, or Bwlch Gwyn, roughly translated as White Gap or White Pass, refers to the limestone quarries of Minera, the silica quarries of Bwlchgwyn or, rather more fancifully, the six foot high snowdrifts of long, cold winters, has never been completely resolved.
My father, William Arthur Belton, known as Bill, was born at 17 Wesley Road, Bwlchgwyn, near Wrexham in Denbighshire, on 8th March 1920, the youngest son of Arthur Belton and Edith Williams. His two older brothers were Horace and Harold Belton.

Bwlchgwyn/Brymbo/Minera/Wrexham are interchangeable at times. One person might have lived all his life in the same house in Bwlchgwyn and been baptised in Minera, married in Wrexham, buried in Bwlchgwyn but recorded on a census as living in Brymbo because the parishes merged. This sort of thing happened all the time and the parish boundaries changed a few times. Being ‘born in Wrexham’ only proves that the birth was in the Wrexham registration area.
